We installed and played the biggest jigsaw puzzle apps on iOS and Android and compared what actually matters: what you pay, how heavy the ads are, the real piece-count ceiling, and whether you can use your own pictures. Here is what we found.

How we judged them
Four things, in this order. What does it cost to actually play — not the install price, the real cost of getting to a puzzle you want. How intrusive are the ads, specifically whether they interrupt a puzzle in progress. What is the highest piece count available, and is it gated. And can you play your own images, or only the catalogue. Everything else — themes, daily rewards, collections — is secondary to those four.
What most people are actually complaining about
Read enough reviews in this category and the same complaints recur: ads appearing mid-puzzle, ads that become harder to dismiss, subscription prompts with no visible decline option, previously free content moving behind a paywall after an update, and offline play disappearing in a later version. Piece-count ceilings and blurry low-resolution images come up repeatedly too. None of these are about puzzle mechanics — they are about how the app treats you.
What to check before you install anything
Look at the store listing for three specifics: the maximum piece count, whether custom photo puzzles are free or premium, and what the subscription actually unlocks. Then read the one-star reviews from the last three months rather than the average rating — in this category the recent reviews tell you about the current monetisation, and the average tells you about the app from three years ago.
Magic Jigsaw Puzzles
The largest catalogue in the category, with tens of thousands of images and licensed collections, and it supports puzzles from your own photos. Subscription is central to the experience and the ad load is the most common complaint. Goes up to 1,200 pieces. Pick it if catalogue size is what you care about.
Jigsaw Puzzles (Easybrain)
The most-installed jigsaw app, built around a daily puzzle rhythm and a relaxed classic experience, with offline support. Extremely polished. Pick it if you want to be handed a good puzzle each day without making decisions.
Jigsawscapes
A very large, well-curated catalogue and a calm classic feel, ad-supported rather than subscription-led. Difficulty comes as preset levels. Pick it if you want a big ready-made library and do not need custom images.
Jigsaw Puzzles Epic
A deep, well-organised category tree and a long track record across phones and tablets, with custom photo support. The piece-count ceiling sits in the hundreds, which is the main reason people move on. Pick it if you like browsing a structured library.
